One of my key points was the need for accurate and evidence-based information to be taught to healthcare professionals \u2013 and for the same information to be provided to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past few months, healthcare focus has shifted sharply to all things Covid-19. Interestingly though, GPs I\u00a0speak with are reporting an increasing number of consultations for neck and back pain, as people have adjusted to a\u00a0more inactive lifestyle and working from\u00a0home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u00a0have spoken with a\u00a0number of journalists writing articles about working from home, and have had to dispel the myths around\u00a0\u200b\u2018good\u2019 or\u00a0\u2018perfect\u2019 posture, the importance of\u00a0\u200b\u2018sitting up straight\u2019 and the need for an expensive\u00a0\u200b\u2018ergonomic\u2019 chair that keeps your back in the correct position. None of this is supported by the research evidence. Recent studies have shown no link between postures of any kind and back pain, and that there is no consensus between healthcare professionals as to what\u00a0\u200b\u2018good\u2019 and\u00a0\u200b\u2018bad\u2019 posture look\u00a0like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back pain is the biggest cause of disability worldwide and costs society billions in care and support every\u00a0year. However, it is poorly treated because it is poorly understood.\u00a0One thing I am passionate about is ensuring patients get accurate and up-to-date information that is based on real evidence, so that they can feel empowered in driving their recovery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Pure Sports Medicine, we have produced an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/puresportsmed.com\/blog\/posts\/research-low-back-pain-infographic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">infographic<\/a>\u00a0based on real-life evidence from our patient data. It is designed to help patients and the general public understand back pain more\u00a0accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our infographic includes information about several myths and unhelpful beliefs and shows how effective education and appropriate, individualised management with manual therapy and exercise can help patients return to normal daily\u00a0life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as the information in the <em>infographic<\/em>, here are some other key messages for healthcare professionals and patients:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Most episodes of low back pain settle reasonably quickly<\/li><li>Back pain does not get worse with age<\/li><li>Like all other pain we experience in life, back pain is influenced by many factors including our mood, our attitude and coping strategies, our expectations and our sleep\u00a0patterns<\/li><li>Our backs are made to move! Movement in all directions is safe but more importantly movement and exercise are essential to keep our spines healthy and\u00a0strong<\/li><li>Spinal posture during sitting, standing and lifting does not predict the development of low back pain or its persistence. <em>This is an especially important message at a\u00a0time when so many people are working from home and may be worried about their work set up. For more information on this see a recent article I wrote\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/puresportsmed.com\/blog\/posts\/working-from-home-hints-habits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"here (opens in a new tab)\">here<\/a><\/em><\/li><li>Our\u00a0\u200b\u2018core muscles\u2019 are important in ensuring normal spinal movement but we do not need to strengthen them. A\u00a0\u200b\u2018strong core\u2019 will neither prevent nor fix back pain and a\u00a0\u200b\u2018weak core\u2019 does not cause low back pain.
