    Frequently asked questions

  • What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?

The main symptoms of pain, lack of movement, lack of function or a combination of these. These can affect any joint, whether it's the shoulder, elbow, hand or the wrist.

The other main area that I see patients with are people who've also sustained either a sports injury or a fracture to the upper limb – anywhere from hands, fingers, wrists, all the way up to the shoulder.

  • What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?

Before any treatment is discussed, we have to make the right diagnosis. That's based on taking a history, examining and, if needed, investigations.

Depending on what the problem is, we offer a wide range of treatments. They could be conservative, with the help of physiotherapists, hand therapists and that sort of treatment to try and get the patient better both in terms of getting rid of the pain and getting back the movement and the function in whatever joint that's affected. Other treatments will be treatment like injections.

Finally, surgical options. That's anything that needs surgery to fix or improve to all those. From a surgical point of view, I'm very much an arthroscopy surgeon. I do a lot of my surgery through keyhole, but also do open surgeries. It all depends on what part of the body is involved and what the condition is and what it needs doing.

  • What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?

The main area and the main bulk of my work is the shoulder. The most particular area of work tends to be conditions that are involving injuries to the shoulder, tears in the tendons around the shoulder called the rotator cuff, instability or dislocations of the shoulder, and also treatment of arthritis.

The presentations really vary in the elbow, hand and wrist. The main areas with elbow are things like tennis elbow and golfers elbow, but also elbow arthritis. For the hand and wrist, the predominant presentations are the injuries like fractures of the wrist or the fingers, but I also treat conditions like carpal tunnel, trigger fingers, De Quervain's disease and ganglions.
