    Mr Nimalan Maruthainar has been an Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital since 2005. Trained as a general surgeon, his practice covers general orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic trauma, and he undertakes primary and revision knee and hip replacement procedures. His special areas of interest include meniscal disease, hip replacement surgery, knee replacement surgery, ligament reconstruction including anterior cruciate ligament, wrist fractures, degenerative knee disorders, knee pain, knee arthroscopy, lower limb trauma and carpal tunnel syndrome.

    After undergraduate studies at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, Mr Maruthainar pursued House Officer training at the Royal Free Hospital and the Lister Hospital Stevenage. He then worked as a Demonstrator in Anatomy at the Leeds University, in association with the Nuffield Hospital, York.

    His peer-reviewed publications include work on the management of scaphoid fractures, primary bone tumours, Gaucher's disease, the interpretation of radiographs in the emergency setting and the peri-operative care of patients. He is also an advisor to various medical organisations on orthopaedic matters and has a local lead role in training.
