I am an academic and clinical cardiologist with a specialist interest in heart failure, and the mechanisms underlying the biology of the failing heart. I have studied cardiac gene therapy for heart failure over the last 10 years, and I am the UK national coordinating invetsigator for the first UK gene therapy trial for heart failure, and I am the principal investigator for the SERCA-LVAD gene therapy trial. I am interested in a number of novel cardiac repair strategies, including gene therapy, stem cell therapy and tissue engineering.
I have also set up a new specialist service to address the growing issue of cardiac complications of traditional and modern cancer therapies, which are becoming increasingly important with the improved efficacy of these targeted therapies and survival of people with cancer. I offer a specialist opinion and care for people with cancer, either regarding cardiac optimisation prior to surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy in individuals with preexisting cardiovascular risk, treatment of people who have cardiac complications of their cancer treatment, either during or after their course of treatment.
Finally, I have a major interest in the effect of stress on the heart, and helping people understand and manage their cardiac symptoms caused by stress. This includes both long-term stresses, such as workplace stress and cardiovascular health, and also severe, sudden stresses triggering acute cardiac syndromes, including the increasingly recognised condition known as Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy.
