    Mr Krishna Moorthy (MS MD FRCS) holds the honour of performing the UK's first robotic gastric bypass and gastric band. He works as a Consultant Surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare, NHS trust and as the director of the MSc in Surgical Technology at Imperial College, London. He is a specialist in the surgical management of cancers of the stomach and the oesophagus. His rich experience attending to complicated cases of upper gastrointestinal cancer and bariatric surgery includes laparoscopic gastric banding, laparoscopic gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

    He has a special interest in ensuring systems safety in surgery. He was on the World Health Organization (WHO) working group for the development of the WHO surgical safety checklist. His research areas include the study of information transfer in surgery, multi-disciplinary handover, safety and teamwork in the operating theatre and safety and quality of care of patients undergoing elective and emergency surgery. He has also published widely on the role of simulations in surgical training.

    He has spearheaded efforts to develop two e-learning modules on patient safety for undergraduate students and a safety skills training programme for the surgical trainees. He is also the director of a Master?s programme in surgical technology and contributes to the Masters in Safety and Quality of care.

    Mr Krishna Moorthy is a member of the Associations of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI), the Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS), the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS), the International Federation of Surgery for Obesity (IFSO), the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons (ALS) and the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons (EAES).
