Place of primary qualification: University of Nottingham

Professor Paul J Foster is a Consultant and Clinical Professor at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. His pioneering research in the management of angle-closure glaucoma is already providing practical benefits to patients in the UK and he provides approximately 2,000 patient appointments as well as 600 laser and surgical procedures to Moorfields per year. He has a busy clinical practice specialising in glaucoma and high risk cataract surgery. He was voted by his peers as one of the 100 most influential eye surgeons globally in 2014 and 2016, and one of the top 25 eye and vision researchers in Europe.

A graduate of Nottingham University Medical School, Prof Foster trained at Oxford Eye Hospital, Moorfields and Singapore National Eye Center. He was awarded a PhD in Clinical Ophthalmology from University College London (UCL) for ground-breaking research on glaucoma. At UCL he carried out a population-based study of glaucoma prevalence and risk factors in Mongolia. This is now widely recognised as an important and ground-breaking piece of research. It identified a high prevalence of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) in this East Asian population at a time when data from China and Japan suggested that PACG was relatively rare. These findings were consolidated during a three year research fellowship in Singapore, which demonstrated again the poor prognosis for sight among people with undetected PACG.

Prof Foster has published 210 peer-reviewed papers, 14 book chapters and 5 journal editorials. He has been a Trustee of the British Council for the Prevention of Blindness, and Chaired BCPB’s Scientific Advisory Panel. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Surgeons, England. He sits on the NICE glaucoma guidelines panel which advises on national eye care policy. His clinical and research achievements have been recognised by prizes and awards in the UK, USA, Singapore, China and Australia. His future research into the epidemiology of glaucoma will involve collaborative work with colleagues at Cambridge University and involve assessment of the impact of diet, lifestyle and environment on glaucoma.
