Mr Parker is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in disorders of the adult foot and ankle. He is a Board member and the foot and ankle sub-specialty lead at One Welbeck Orthopaedics, a state-of-the-art new facility conveniently located near to Bond St. Tube station offering first-class imaging and diagnostics including Standing CT scanning, 3T MRI as well as a seamless referral between sports physicians, pain specialists and rheumatologists. Additionally, he is part of The London Orthopaedic Clinic at King Edward VII’s Hospital in Marylebone where he conducts regular multi-disciplinary meetings to present and discuss complex foot and ankle disorders.
His NHS practice is based in the Foot, Ankle and Limb Reconstruction Unit of the Royal London and Newham University Hospital. He has undertaken advanced foot and ankle fellowship training within the Avon Orthopaedic Unit in Bristol focusing on arthroscopic ankle and hindfoot surgery. He was awarded the European Foot and Ankle Society travelling fellowship in 2014 taking him through the specialist foot and ankle units in Switzerland, Belgium, and Spain. His main interest is in the arthroscopic and minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery. His clinical expertise ranges from cartilage, ligament and tendon surgery, to ankle replacement, ankle and hindfoot fusion with arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical approaches, bunion (hallux valgus), flat foot (pes planus) and high arch foot correction, post-traumatic reconstruction and revision surgery.
Mr Parker qualified from the University of Southampton in 2002 and was awarded a distinction in medical sciences. He undertook research within the University Orthopaedic Department at Southampton General Hospital before his orthopaedic training on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore rotation. He has worked in several highly regarded hospitals within London during his training including the Royal Free, Great Ormond Street, and the tertiary referral foot and ankle unit of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
Mr Parker was awarded the W.J Little Medal by the Seddon Society for his published research into foot and ankle fusion. In addition to numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, Mr Parker has authored book chapters on osteochondral lesions of the talus, foot and ankle fusion, and tumours of the foot and ankle. He also co-edited the foot and ankle section of the EFOST surgical techniques in the sports medicine series. He is a faculty member on several courses including the London Basic Sciences for FRCS and Queens Hospital FRCS course and regularly lectures on foot and ankle surgery to trainees on the Royal London and Percival Pott registrar training rotations as well as to GPs, physiotherapists and medical students. He was a member of the medical team offering specialist support for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in London.

Why do you do what you do?
The simple answer is I am a practical person who enjoys solving problems. Being able to translate this into a solution that eases pain, improves function or corrects deformity for someone is hugely rewarding. Foot and ankle surgery is one of the most intellectually-stimulating and challenging orthopaedic sub-specialities. The diversity of pathology is unrivalled in this field and I’m able to see patients of varying age and physical activity; those with chronic degenerative conditions and progressive deformities and acute trauma.
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
Most commonly, patients present with pain, instability or deformity. This can be a result of an injury which is obvious, or more typically a series of barely-noticeable injuries accumulated over a long period of time. This is often the reason behind the development of a chronic degenerative or deforming condition.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
In most cases, patients actually do not require an operation, but they need someone to diagnose their problem and coordinate their care. As a possessor of operative skill, we are best -placed to be able to determine what conditions will resolve with help, such as physiotherapy, orthotics or other adjunctive therapies and which conditions will deteriorate if they are left neglected. If surgery is required, where possible this is carried-out when all other options have been exhausted. I utilise “key-hole” and minimally-invasive techniques when feasible to reduce pain and healing times and allow early resumption of normal activity.
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
My particular interest is in surgery around the ankle and hindfoot and this includes arthroscopy (key-hole) to treat painful bone spurs, cartilage defects as well as fusion surgery for chronic ankle and hindfoot pain. Ligament and tendon surgery around the ankle as well as delayed or reconstructive revision surgery is also a particular interest.
