What are the common symptoms that your patients present with when they come to consult with you?
Most of them want a check of their moles or they have a lesion that they're worried about. They wonder if it's cancer. Sometimes they do have skin cancers. People have acne, eczema, psoriasis, undiagnosed rashes that's got a great variety, hair loss, et cetera.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
The main things that I do are, in fact, cryotherapy and curettage and cautery.
Can you just talk a little bit more about both of those?
It involves freezing warts and similar lesions with liquid nitrogen. Curettage and cautery means giving a local anaesthetic and scraping a warty lesion. There is shave and cautery where I actually cut off a warty lesion with scalpel – this is a sticking out or raised mole – and then cauterise it.
I also do biopsies in cases of uncertain diagnosis. Those are the actual procedures I do. I don’t any longer do excisions. I tend to refer them to colleagues.
What would you say your main areas of interests are?
General clinical diagnostic dermatology.
Areas of expertise
- Clinical dermatology
- Not lasers or cosmetic procedures
