His operative results are published by the Association of Coloproctology Great Britain and Ireland. He has a wide range of experience in the management of colorectal and anal cancer, endometriosis, inflammatory bowel and diverticular disease, coloproctological conditions (fissure, fistula and haemorrhoids), and general surgery (hernia, complex abdominal wall reconstruction). He is a JAG accredited endoscopist and trainer.
His unique training and experience includes treating officials and athletes with colorectal and general surgical conditions at the 2012 London Olympic and Para-Olympic Games. He was the designated colorectal surgeon for the British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) designated Homerton Endometriosis Centre.
Mr. Wijeyekoon's particular specialist expertise is in the treatment of complex skin pre-cancer ( squamous dysplasia/ AIN3) including laser therapy. He is the Dorset lead for High Resolution Anoscopy and offers a full range of cosmetic and medical treatments.
What are the most common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
It depends on what area they're seeing me about. I see general, surgical and colorectal patients.
Colorectal patients could be any variety of things from presenting with cancer to simple rectal bleeding to pain.
On the general surgical side, it could be hernias and abdominal pain. A really very wide variety of things.
The third area, my specialist area, the squamous dysplasia of the perineum, AIN3, which I do a lot of work on. Those individuals usually come in via other consultants or other trusts in a tertiary capacity.
They have an established diagnosis, and so the symptoms themselves are not the main issue. It's just how to manage them then.
What treatments are you able to offer your patients?
For colorectal conditions, a whole range of treatments including sort of endoscopic treatments, laparoscopic treatments, keyhole surgery, open surgery, forward referral to allied health professionals and specialist nurses. So, the whole gamut of treatment for colorectal surgery.
In general surgery, I pretty much see and treat all the conditions that I encounter. For example, hernia, lumps, et cetera.
For AIN3, I offer a specialist service assessment in the context of an MDT. The specific skill I have is laser ablation treatment for this. I'm the only other person outside London who offers laser ablation for AIN3 in the UK.
Can you tell us a little bit more about your subspecialist interests?
AIN3 is just a generic term that people use for precancerous changes in the perineal region. It can involve the anal canal, the region around it, the vulva, the vagina. There is an overlap between gynecology and colorectal surgery.
It's an evolving field. I was part of the team which developed the first national tertiary referral center for this condition. We were receiving patients from throughout the UK and some from Europe as well. Two-and-a-half years ago, I took the position up in Bournemouth. There is no service in Southern England. I've set it up here.
As a consequence, I get a lot of complex patients referred nationally and also internationally on the private side for assessment and treatment of AIN3. On the private side, I believe I'm still the only person in the UK to really providing private treatment for this.
