Place of primary qualification: University of London

Mr Alun Yewlett is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon working at the BMI Hospital in Lincoln. His NHS base is Grantham and District Hospital where he is the Upper Limb Lead. He specialises in shoulder and elbow surgery and is a high volume arthroplasty surgeon. He offers a “one stop” ultrasound shoulder service.

In addition to his surgical qualifications he obtained a higher degree in Trauma Surgery for which he won the award for outstanding performance and his dissertation was on complex elbow fractures. He underwent further specialist training in shoulder and elbow surgery both nationally and internationally working with Dr Roger van Riet and Dr Eygendaal - two of the world’s foremost elbow arthroscopists in Belgium and Holland. He was privileged to train under both Mr Ro Kulkarni for two years of his registrar training and also Mr Tim Matthews in Cardiff, sparking his enthusiasm for elbow surgery. Following his CCT he completed several prestigious competitively appointed fellowships. The first was in Exeter working under Mr Chris Smith, the second was in Stockport under Mr Matt Ravenscroft as his first Senior Shoulder Fellow. The third was in London under Mr Vipul Patel as the BOA Transitional Leadership Fellow.

Mr Yewlett was awarded the national British Elbow & Shoulder Society (BESS) Leadership fellowship in 2015 and he has co-authored the national BESS / BOA guidelines on ACJ pathology. He believes in good quality research to underpin clinical decision making and collects Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) data for all of his patients and regularly audits his outcomes and performance against national standards. He uses published evidence to inform his decision making process and will only suggest a surgical solution for a problem when there is no better non-surgical alternative. He was awarded a national certificate of excellence in 2018 for consistently receiving outstanding feedback from his patients. He also won the BESS pump priming grant award in 2018 for his work on Consent Plus for Shoulder and Elbow arthroplasty.

    Frequently asked questions

  • What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?

Shoulder patients generally vary depending on their age and the nature of their complaint. In the younger patients it tends to be complaints of instability in the shoulder and feeling that “they can’t trust it” when doing their occupational or recreational activities.

The slightly older group tend to have shoulder pain that is annoying but they can usually carry on during the daytime but it really becomes noticeable at night and stops them from getting a good night’s sleep as they are frequently woken from their sleep with the pain.

In my experience it is the lack of sleep that often drives patients to a doctor often prompted by their other halves who are also fed up with getting their sleep disturbed by their partner’s restlessness!

The older patients often have pain at rest in their shoulder, or complain of weakness and an inability to lift things.

Elbow patients often present with pain around the elbow, stiffness and occasional “catching” and many patients come in complaining of pins and needles in the hands usually over the little and ring fingers.

  • What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?

In the clinic setting I specialise in one stop diagnostic techniques and where possible biological treatments that can be done on the same visit.

For the elbow this often involves prp injections under ultrasound guidance to the site of the pain.

I offer more complex biological treatments for selected cases as well and often perform these cases as joint cases with my consultant colleague Prof Lee if they are needed which can be done in the clinic setting but will need to be arranged in advance.

In addition to clinic based treatments I offer both keyhole and open surgical treatments for shoulder and elbow conditions. Although I have been extensively trained in both techniques by some of the worlds best shoulder and elbow surgeons, I will always make an assessment of what technique I think will be best for an individual patient if surgery is needed as no two patients are alike and do not guarantee one technique over another.

I am very privileged to work with an extremely talented group of anaesthetic specialists and am able to offer wideawake surgery and daycase surgery for most conditions including joint replacements in selected cases.

  • What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?

I am a shoulder and elbow specialist with an interest in sports injuries and cellular regeneration techniques. I am the elbow lead for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust and head of service at Grantham and District Hospital. I am a high volume shoulder and elbow arthroplasty surgeon and one of the country’s leading exponents of a “total one stop” shoulder clinic using office based arthroscopic diagnostic techniques using the “mi-eye” device and ultrasound guided injections when needed to avoid surgical intervention wherever possible.
