  • About Dr Brian Gould

    GMC number: 1642456

    Year qualified: 1973

Place of primary qualification: University of London

A pioneering cardiologist, Dr Brian Gould joined Queen Mary’s Hospital in 1989 and built up an extensive cardiac department from scratch. He played a leading role in equipping the department with the state of the art monitoring and diagnostic equipment. He developed his angioplasty skills at the Brook and St Thomas’ hospitals. As a Consultant Cardiologist, he gained a wide experience of all aspects of cardiac care, including angina, heart failure, heart valve problems, palpitations and hypertension, coronary angiography, coronary angioplasty and stenting. He now works in private practice although he also undertakes ad hoc NHS sessions of coronary angiography. His main areas of interest are treatment of coronary artery disease, including the treatment of angina and heart attack which may require coronary angiography and coronary angioplasty, heart failure, hypertension, diagnosis and investigation of valvular heart disease, and diagnosis and treatment of palpitations.

Dr Gould qualified from St Mary's Hospital University of London in 1973 and began training at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Welwyn Garden City. His interest in cardiology developed while working in the cardiothoracic department at the Brook Hospital in 1977. In 1979 he started work as a research registrar at Northwick Park Hospital where he undertook clinical research into the viability and accuracy of recording patients' blood pressure at home. It was rare for patients at the time to measure their blood pressure themselves since there were no mass-produced portable monitors. This led Dr Gould to write his MD thesis on such a possibility, as well as publishing in excess of 35 research papers in leading medical journals including the British Medical Journal, The Lancet and Circulation.

After completing his tenure as Senior Registrar to the Plymouth/Bristol rotation, Dr Gould moved to the Bristol Royal Infirmary in 1988 where he continued to develop his cardiac skills and became interested in angioplasty, which had just started in the mid 1980's. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) in April 1993.
