Mr Duncan Learmonth is an Orthopaedic Knee and Shoulder Consultant Surgeon. In 2004 he established the Birmingham Knee and Shoulder Clinic at the Priory Hospital with Marcus Green and Samir Massoud. After serving in the NHS for Royal Orthopaedic Hospital since 1993, he transferred to full time private practice in 2007 but maintains an Honorary NHS Contract at the hospital. He also serves as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham.
Mr Learmonth graduated in Medicine from Birmingham University in 1982. He had previously obtained a BSc Honours degree in Physiology and Biochemistry at the Southampton University. He was an Anatomy Lecturer at Birmingham Medical School in 1983. He trained in surgery and orthopaedic surgery in Birmingham and Leicester. He obtained his FRCS in 1986 and was awarded his accreditation in orthopaedic surgery in 1993 and was placed on the Specialist Register. During his specialist orthopaedic training he was awarded the following fellowships: Thackray Knee Fellow Leicester, Knee Fellow at the Clinic de Maussins Paris, Sportsmed Knee and Shoulder Fellow Adelaide Australia. He was awarded the National Prize for Orthopaedic Registrars (BOTA) for the best research paper presented at the British Orthopaedic Association Meeting 1993.
Mr Learmonth is an established authority in the Knee and Shoulder Surgery in the UK. He is a regular faculty member at National meetings and teaches at the following regional orthopaedic training programmes: Oswestry, Sheffield, Leicester, Cardiff, Cambridge and Birmingham. He is a regular demonstrator in arthroscopic surgery workshops of the knee and shoulder for UK and overseas consultant orthopaedic surgeons. He has previously been a surgical tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has been invited as a guest speaker at the Norwegian, Greek and Egyptian orthopaedic association meetings. He has published more than thirty papers on knee and shoulder conditions. He has contributed many book chapters on knee trauma and articular cartilage disease.
