Prof. Francisco Leyva-Leon is a highly esteemed Consultant Cardiologist based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. He qualified from Manchester University in 1987 and subsequently trained in Cardiology at the prestigious Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals. He has been serving as a Consultant Cardiologist since 2000.
Prof. Leyva-Leon has a wealth of experience in general cardiology and is adept at treating a variety of conditions including angina, heart attacks, hypertension, and raised cholesterol. His special interests lie in heart failure, cardiomyopathies, cardiac rhythm disorders (arrhythmias), and cardiac imaging. He is particularly skilled in advanced cardiac imaging techniques such as echocardiography, cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (cardiac MRI), and cardiac computed tomography (cardiac CT).
A pioneer in cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) in the UK, Professor Leyva-Leon has significantly contributed to the field of heart failure treatment with specialised pacemakers. His expertise is further recognised through his past presidency of the British Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and his role as a clinical advisor to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) on national guidelines for Drug Therapy and Cardiac Device Therapy in Heart Failure.
In addition to his clinical work, Professor Leyva-Leon is a Professor of Cardiology at Aston University Medical School. He leads cutting-edge research on cardiac devices, imaging, electrophysiology (rhythm disorders), cardiomyopathies, and heart failure. His prolific academic career includes the publication of over 400 research papers and abstracts, and he has delivered more than 300 lectures worldwide.
