Professor Francisco Vega-López became a Consultant Dermatologist in the NHS in 1997. Currently, he works at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is an Honorary Professor at London University (LSHTM) and also at the National Medical Centre and National University (IMSS-UNAM) in Mexico City. He has practised clinical internal medicine and/or Dermatology in rural and urban areas in Mexico, London and Nepal. Approximately 70% of his clinical practice involves the diagnosis and treatment of general dermatological or inflammatory conditions and skin cancer. He diagnoses and treats pigmented naevi, moles, itchy skin, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, acne, seborrhoeic conditions, contact dermatitis, leg ulcers, benign/non-cancerous skin tumours, hair and nails disorders, common skin infections and sun damage. Common skin malignant conditions seen in his practice include basal cell carcinoma, Bowen’s disease, squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and less often, forms of skin lymphoma or sarcoma. His remaining clinical work is dedicated to patients suffering from autoimmune disorders, cancer chemotherapy-associated skin disorders, travel-associated skin conditions, tropical dermatology, HIV-related skin problems, and other rare infections or infestations of the skin, in particular, granulomatous infections and cutaneous leishmaniasis.
Prof. Vega-López achieved his first Medical degree in 1977-1978 at the Universidad Veracruzana in Mexico. He subsequently graduated in Dermatology at the National Medical Centre and National University in Mexico City and has been a Consultant Dermatologist since 1982. As a hospital consultant in the health system in Mexico, he practised Internal Medicine and Dermatology until 1986. Following five years at London University to complete his Master’s studies (MSc), higher research degree (PhD) and Certificate of clinical and molecular studies in immunology, he was appointed Chair, Head, and Professor of Dermatology and Medical Mycology at the National Medical Centre, IMSS-UNAM in Mexico City (1992-1998). He has been registered by the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom since 1996, and has been certified by the Board of Dermatology in Mexico since 1989 and recently re-certified in 2011. He has taught and lectured extensively in Diploma, Masters, and Dermatology post-graduate courses globally, and has been a PhD examiner for London University.
As a result of his professional achievements and merits within clinical practice, medical education, and academic work, he has been awarded membership and fellowship by bodies including the Royal College of Physicians (London), the Faculty of Travel Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow), the Academia Nacional de Medicina (Mexico), and the Mexican Board of Dermatology (CMD). Currently, he is an active member of learned medical societies including the British Association of Dermatologists, British Medical Association, Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and Sociedad Mexicana de Dermatologia amongst others.
