Dr James Barnes is a consultant paediatric and young adult orthopaedic surgeon practising at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and Bristol Royal Infirmary, part of University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. He was appointed consultant in 2015 after completing specialist fellowship training at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne

He specialises in osteotomies for hip dysplasia, slipped upper femoral epiphysis (SUFE), Perthes disease, non arthritic hip pain, gait abnormalities, sports injuries, paediatric trauma and adolescent knee pain

To date, he has performed over 3,000 surgical procedures, demonstrating his expertise in complex hip pathology and young adult hip preservation

He was awarded the prestigious Mark Paterson Travelling Fellowship to enhance his skills in managing complex hip pathologies.

He is Honorary Clinical Tutor at University of Bristol, paediatric section editor for Hip International, educational supervisor, trained appraiser and has served on the University Medical Admissions Committee for over a decade .


Outside of work he has four young children and enjoys cross country running in his spare time.
