About Prof. Aali Sheen
GMC number: 4066576
Year qualified: 1993
Place of primary qualification: University of Dundee
Professor Aali Sheen is a Consultant General Surgeon with a specialisation in abdominal wall hernias. He completed his medical training at the University of Dundee in 1993 and subsequently undertook specialist training in General Surgery across London, Leeds, and Manchester. Further honing his expertise, he trained in keyhole hernia surgery in Sweden.
Professor Sheen is a national leader in managing groin pain in patients and athletes. He redefined the concept of a 'sportsman's groin' and published the first consensus statement on groin pain in athletes in 2014. His extensive research in this field has led to numerous publications and invitations to speak at international conferences. He was the UK's Lead Investigator in the world's first randomised controlled trial comparing treatments for sportsman's groin.
With a wealth of experience treating both elite and amateur athletes, including Premiership football players, Professor Sheen advocates for non-surgical treatments such as physiotherapy, Plasma injections, and Shockwave Therapy when appropriate. Recently, he has pioneered robotic surgery, being the first to perform a robotic inguinal hernia repair using the Versius system rvTEP.
Professor Sheen is a core member of Manchester's Hip and Groin Clinic at MIHP and also consults patients independently. His areas of expertise include gallbladder removal, keyhole and open hernia repair, liver surgery, and the Whipple procedure. He treats conditions such as chronic abdominal pain, gallstones, various types of hernias, and pancreatic disorders. He has been practising as a consultant since 2006.
