Ahmed El-Modir gained his MRCP in 1997 before becoming a fellow of the royal college of radiologists (clinical oncology) in 2002. He became a fellow of the royal college of physicians of Edinburgh in 2007.

Ahmed completed his training in oncology in the West Midlands and was appointed as a consultant oncologist at the University Hospital Birmingham in 2003. He is an honorary senior lecturer with the Birmingham University. He is also a visiting oncologist to the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust.Ahmed specialises in the tretment of cancer with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. He is the principle investigator for a number of national trials.
