Dr Alessandro Giardini: Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital
Dr Alessandro Giardini has been a cornerstone of Great Ormond Street Hospital since 2007, serving as a Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist and the Director of Inpatient Services. He oversees the cardiac ward and the cardiac high dependency unit, ensuring the highest standard of care for children admitted for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of congenital or acquired heart defects.
Dr Giardini earned his medical degree from the School of Medicine at the University of Bologna, Italy, where he also completed a PhD focused on the pathophysiology of heart failure in patients with congenital heart disease. His specialist paediatric cardiology training took place at both the University of Bologna and the University of California in San Francisco.
With over a decade of expertise in diagnosing and managing children with congenital heart defects, Dr Giardini is particularly renowned for his work with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). He is highly regarded for his ability to provide guidance for children and adolescents with documented cardiac disease, especially those experiencing symptoms during exercise such as palpitations, chest pains, or fainting/syncope. Additionally, he leads specialist clinics for children with paediatric hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Dr Giardini's approach to care is deeply patient-focused, characterised by his compassion and understanding towards children. He believes that families are an essential part of the ""One Team"" concept that underpins the treatment provided in the cardiac ward. As he explains, ""Our care is highly technical but must be delivered in a humane, personalised way.""
Dr Giardini's commitment to excellence and his empathetic approach make him a trusted and respected figure in paediatric cardiology.
