About Mr Andraay Leung

GMC number: 6163291

Year qualified: 2007

Place of primary qualification: University of Glasgow

Mr Andraay Leung operates as a consultant orthopaedic spinal surgeon, maintaining practices situated in Birmingham and Stourbridge. Specializing in various aspects of spinal health including spinal degenerative conditions, adult spinal deformity, spinal trauma, and minimally invasive spinal surgery, he extends his expertise both privately at Harborne Hospital in Birmingham and Stourside Hospital. In addition to his private practice, he dedicates considerable time to his NHS commitments at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, renowned as the UK’s busiest major trauma center.

His professional focus revolves exclusively around spinal surgery, encompassing the cervical spine, thoracic spine, and lumbar spine. Alongside addressing spinal degenerative conditions, Mr Leung's specialized interests encompass spinal trauma and adult spinal deformity.

Mr Leung obtained his degree from the University of Glasgow and pursued further training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery within the West of Scotland region. Following this, he completed complex spinal fellowships at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, encompassing both orthopaedic and neurosurgical aspects.

An early advocate for remote consultations, Mr Leung recognized the advantages of this approach in terms of time efficiency and patient convenience. He was actively involved in pioneering virtual spinal clinics in Glasgow in 2017, offering telephone consultations to patients across the West of Scotland region. Since then, remote consultations have become an integral part of his clinical practice.

Mr Leung is deeply invested in teaching and research. Holding the position of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, and previously at the University of Glasgow, he has contributed significantly as an associate principal investigator in multiple multi-centre, randomized controlled trials focusing on spinal trauma. Additionally, he played a crucial role on the steering committee of a multi-center observational study into cauda equina syndrome (UCES), with his work being featured in various peer-reviewed journals. Recognized for his expertise, he was invited to join the teaching faculty for the UK Advanced Spinal Trauma course organized by AO Spine.
