About Mr Benjamin Tan
"Mr Benjamin Tan is a consultant surgeon specialising in general and upper gastrointestinal surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, where he joined the Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery unit in January 2017.
He completed his specialist surgical training (CCT) in general and upper GI surgery in the East Midlands, obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2014, and gained full consultant status in 2016 .
Mr Tan completed an advanced oesophagogastric fellowship at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and is proficient in both laparoscopic and open surgical techniques. His clinical interests include complex oesophagogastric conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernias, and oesophageal and gastric cancers . He offers a wide range of procedures, including anti-reflux surgery, hiatus hernia repair, oesophagectomy, gastrectomy, gallbladder surgery, hernia repair (key?hole and open), diagnostic laparoscopy, adhesiolysis, and endoscopy (OGD) . Conditions treated include appendicitis, gallstones, biliary tract and gallbladder cancers, GORD, hernias of various types, lipomas, GISTs, oesophageal and stomach cancers .
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Tan is involved in academic roles, providing online teaching for the Masters of Surgical Sciences programme at the University of Edinburgh and tutoring third?year medical students at the University of Birmingham . He remains active in research focused on nutrition, body composition and their impact on outcomes after oesophago?gastric cancer surgery .
