Dr Caris Smith is a highly esteemed Consultant Laparoscopic General and Colorectal Surgeon, currently practising in London. She specialises in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, bowel cancers, and diverticular disease. Dr Smith is also an accredited endoscopist, proficient in performing both colonoscopies and gastroscopies.
Dr Smith began her career as a Consultant Surgeon at Medway NHS Foundation Trust in Kent, where she served for seven years before relocating to London in 2023. During her tenure at Medway, she held the position of Associate Medical Director for patient safety and quality. Additionally, she was the independent Secondary Care doctor on the Governing Body of Surrey Heartlands CCG, transitioning to an Integrated Care System in 2022, where she served as the non-Executive director lead for patient safety.
In her current role, Dr Smith is the co-lead for a national trial investigating the use of exclusive enteral nutrition prior to Crohn's disease surgery. She is also actively involved in global health initiatives, volunteering with the Kings Centre for Global Health Partnerships. In this capacity, she leads surgical efforts for the Kings - Zambia partnership.
Dr Smith is registered with the Royal College of Pathologists and contributes her expertise as a Medical Examiner at East Surrey Hospital. Her dedication to patient care and safety, combined with her extensive experience and leadership in both clinical and research settings, make her a distinguished figure in the field of colorectal surgery.
