About Dr Caroline Butler
Dr Caroline Butler is a GP with over 20 years of clinical experience and a specialist interest in metabolic health, lifestyle medicine and midlife health.
Alongside her NHS career, she has completed additional training as a Lifestyle Medicine Physician, Transformational Health and Nutrition Coach and Menopause Transformation Practitioner. This allows her to combine medical expertise with practical behavioural change strategies that help clients implement sustainable improvements in their health. Her work focuses on addressing the key drivers of metabolic disease: insulin resistance, chronic inflammation and hormonal imbalance.
Patients commonly experience improvements in energy, mental clarity, mood stability and sustainable weight loss, while also reducing their long-term risk of conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and dementia.
Dr Butler has extensive experience supporting patients with prediabetes, Type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as those using GLP-1 medications who want to optimise their outcomes through nutrition and lifestyle medicine.
By blending conventional medical care with a lifestyle-first, coaching-led approach, she helps patients not only understand what works for their body but also build the habits that make lasting change possible. Her goal is simple: to help people regain control of their health, restore their energy and live well for longer.

Frequently asked questions
Why did you decide to become a Female Metabolic Health & Weight Loss Specialist ?
I originally trained as a physician and academic haematology registrar in London and Oxford before retraining as a GP, where I valued the opportunity to build deeper relationships with patients and support them over time.
I became increasingly interested in the root causes behind the symptoms I was seeing so often in clinic: fatigue, weight gain, fertility challenges, and metabolic disease. Again and again, the same underlying pattern emerged: insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and hormonal imbalance.
This led me to expand my training in lifestyle medicine and health and nutrition coaching so I could empower patients with the knowledge and tools to improve their metabolic health through sustainable lifestyle change.
However, I also recognise that making these changes can be difficult when insulin resistance is already present. For some patients, GLP-1 medications such as Mounjaro or Wegovy can be a really valuable tool. When used alongside lifestyle and behavioural support, they can help reduce biological barriers to change and make healthier habits easier to implement and sustain.
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
Many of my patients feel that their bodies have suddenly changed and are no longer responding to lifestyle strategies that once worked for them. They may experience:
Unexplained weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, persistent fatigue or low energy, carb cravings and fluctuating blood sugar levels, brain fog and poor concentration, sleep disruption, mood changes or anxiety, difficulty losing weight despite dieting and exercise, difficulty controlling diabetes or hypertension.
Often these symptoms are early indicators of insulin resistance or metabolic dysfunction, even when standard medical tests appear within the normal range.
At Genwell, we support patients who are using, or considering, GLP-1 medications such as Mounjaro or Wegovy. Within our practice, these medications are used alongside holistic medical care and nutrition and lifestyle coaching to help patients achieve sustainable results. My aim is to help patients use these treatments safely and effectively, ideally at the lowest effective dose, while building the nutrition, movement and behavioural foundations needed for long-term metabolic health.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
For patients using GLP-1 medications for weight loss, I provide medical oversight and coaching support to optimise nutrition, protect muscle mass, support metabolic flexibility, and plan for long-term weight maintenance. We offer comprehensive metabolic health assessments designed to identify the underlying drivers of weight gain, fatigue, and metabolic dysfunction.
This typically includes: Detailed medical and lifestyle history, nutrition and food diary analysis, advanced blood testing (including HbA1c, fasting insulin, lipid markers such as HOMA-IR, ApoB, and liver function), metabolic risk assessment, personalised nutrition and lifestyle strategies, exercise and movement guidance, stress and sleep optimisation, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) integration where appropriate.
The aim is not just weight loss, but improved metabolic resilience, energy, and long-term disease prevention.
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
My primary focus is metabolic health in midlife, particularly when hormonal changes can accelerate insulin resistance, weight gain, and cardiometabolic risk.
I have a specialist interest in:
Insulin resistance and prediabetes, sustainable weight loss and weight maintenance, GLP-1 medication support, health & nutrition coaching, hormone optimisation and HRT in metabolic health, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), cardiometabolic risk reduction.
I am particularly passionate about helping women regain control of their health at midlife, using a combination of medical insight, lifestyle medicine, and practical coaching strategies.
