Dr Charis Costopoulos is a consultant interventional cardiologist at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He specialises in both general and interventional cardiology, with a particular focus on complex coronary angioplasty and structural heart interventions, especially transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
Dr Costopoulos graduated with distinction from the University of Cambridge and completed his core medical training in Cambridge, Oxford, and London. He holds an MPhil in Translational Medicine and Therapeutics and a PhD in Cardiology from the University of Cambridge. His interventional cardiology training includes fellowships at San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan and Hammersmith Hospital in London.
Appointed as a British Heart Foundation Clinical Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, Dr Costopoulos has a strong research background. His work focuses on the role of biomechanical forces in coronary atherosclerosis, leading to numerous publications in major cardiovascular journals. He has also received the Young Investigator Award in Vascular Biology and Cardiovascular Disease in 2017.
Dr Costopoulos manages a wide range of conditions including chest pain, valvular heart disease, breathlessness, palpitations, arrhythmias, heart failure, and hypertension. His expertise in coronary intervention includes angiography, pressure wire assessment, intravascular imaging, and stent implantation. In structural intervention, he is skilled in TAVI, patent foramen closure, paravalvular leak closure, and percutaneous treatment of mitral valve disease.
Since his appointment as a consultant at Royal Papworth Hospital, Dr Costopoulos continues to advance his clinical and research interests, contributing significantly to the field of cardiology.
