  • About Mr Chris Rees

    GMC number: 4070041

    Year qualified: 1994

Place of primary qualification: University of London

Mr Chris Rees is an orthopaedic surgeon based in Essex with a busy NHS practice at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford. He undertakes private work at both Springfield Hospital in Chelmsford and the Chelmsford Private Day Surgery Hospital. He is currently the Clinical Director for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery at Broomfield Hospital. He is an accomplished orthopaedic surgeon with a particular interest in: patient expectations and outcome after total knee replacement (TKR), ACL reconstruction, phono-arthrometry to detect osteoarthritis and patient-matched prostheses for TKR. His practice involves all forms of knee surgery in both young and old patients and particularly the management of sporting and traumatic knee injuries. He is among the few surgeons in the UK currently offering knee replacement surgery using an implant made of Oxinium, an alloy of zirconium that forms a ceramic surface when it is oxidised, while retaining a metal core. He has developed subspecialty skills in all forms of knee surgery in both young and old patients particularly in the management of sporting and traumatic knee injuries. In addition he performs general lower limb surgery including hip replacement surgery.

Mr Rees qualified as a doctor in 1994 from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London. Prior to this he undertook an intercalated BSc(Hons) degree in ‘Biological & Clinical Science’ in 1992 at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School. After House Officer positions at the Royal Free and Hemel Hempstead Hospitals, Mr Rees obtained full registration with the GMC in 1995.

Mr Rees is one of the RCS-recognised Educational Supervisors at Broomfield Hospital and is heavily involved in training junior surgeons. He has several published papers to his name and is involved in collaborative work with the Mechanical Engineering Research Group at Anglia Ruskin University. He also teaches on ‘Surgical Skills’ courses run by the Royal College of Surgeons and lectures on knee surgery courses at RNOH, Stanmore.
