Mr Darren Lui is a distinguished deformity and complex spinal surgeon, renowned for his expertise in managing a comprehensive range of spinal conditions. He is based at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and also provides private consultations at The London Bridge Hospital.
Mr Lui's specialist areas of interest include paediatric and adolescent deformity surgery, particularly scoliosis and kyphosis (roundback)/Scheuermann’s disease. His extensive surgical repertoire covers a wide array of procedures, such as revision, anterior and complex spinal surgery, scoliosis and kyphosis surgery, and addressing failed back syndrome. He is also adept at treating primary spine tumours, spinal metastases, and performing balloon and radiofrequency kyphoplasty. Additionally, Mr Lui assists patients with more straightforward spinal issues, including back and leg pain (sciatica).
Mr Lui graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2001. He then pursued a Master’s degree in laboratory-based science, focusing on the role of insulin as an anti-inflammatory agent and its therapeutic potential. His advanced training includes three international spinal fellowships at Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, the Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong, and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, London. In 2016, he was appointed as a Consultant and served at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital before joining St George's Hospital.
Beyond his clinical practice, Mr Lui has made significant contributions to research in his field. He has published over 25 peer-reviewed journal articles and delivered more than 150 podium presentations. He also supervises two science Master’s degrees. His research interests encompass trauma and orthopaedics as well as spine surgery. Mr Lui is passionate about teaching and enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with others.
