About Dr Dimitri Amiras

GMC number: 6104900

Year qualified: 2004

Place of primary qualification: University of London

Dr Amiras is a substantive radiology consultant at the Imperial College Healthcare Trust and a senior honorary clinical lecturer at Imperial College London. He is an alumnus of the Imperial College School of Medicine and the Imperial radiology training programme. Dr Amiras furthered his expertise with a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at Fremantle Hospital, Australia, and observerships at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam and Auckland City Hospital in New Zealand.

As the clinical IT lead for Imaging at Imperial, Dr Amiras pioneered the use of a virtual desktop environment for teleradiology, which proved highly successful during the coronavirus pandemic. He has developed specialised techniques for assessing skin perforators in lower leg reconstructive surgery, significantly reducing surgical time, and is a key member of the complex trauma team.

Dr Amiras is a strong advocate for innovation in medical technology. He is the senior author of a paper detailing the first use of the Microsoft HoloLens in augmented reality plastic reconstructive surgery and has also pioneered its application in radiology training. An engaging speaker, he has delivered keynote speeches for Microsoft and Canon and participated in workshops for the FDA. He is also a co-author of a position paper on the use of augmented reality in healthcare.

In addition to his work in radiology, Dr Amiras has developed a dedicated ultrasound-guided muscle biopsy technique for investigating muscle pathology and is adept at interpreting imaging for the investigation of myopathy. He is a member of the Royal College of Radiologists' iRefer panel, advising on national guidelines for up-to-date imaging practices across the UK.

Dr Amiras is also a 'human factors warrior' and a faculty member of the Human Factors Trainer as part of the Helping Our Teams Transform (HOTT) team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. His commitment to improving healthcare through innovation and education makes him a valuable asset to the medical community.
