Year qualified: 2005
Place of primary qualification: Universita Campus Biomedico di Roma
Dr Eduardo M. Normando is a distinguished clinician scientist and senior lecturer at Imperial College London. He serves as a consultant ophthalmologist at the Western Eye and Charing Cross hospitals. Dr Normando's clinical interests include glaucoma, ophthalmic emergencies, and general ophthalmology. His expertise lies in the early diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma using medications and laser techniques.
Since his appointment, Dr Normando has been the clinical lead for the ophthalmology outpatient clinic at Charing Cross Hospital. He has established a high throughput diagnostic clinic that enhances patient flow across all satellite sites. He is also a key member of the Imperial College Ophthalmic Research Group (ICORG) Clinical Trials Unit, where he acts as the chief investigator in four investigator-led clinical trials.
Dr Normando's research primarily focuses on innovative non-invasive retinal imaging techniques and their applications in assessing new therapeutic strategies for ophthalmic and neurodegenerative diseases. His recent work involves using artificial intelligence to predict the progression of glaucoma, employing a Convolutional Neural Network to identify dying cells in retinal images, which can detect glaucoma progression 18 months earlier than current methods.
Additionally, Dr Normando is developing a novel semi-automated headset-mounted fundus camera, funded by Med Tech Super Connector (MTSC). He is also exploring new applications of Optical Coherence Tomography with both national and international funding.
Dr Normando is an active member of several prestigious medical societies, including the Royal Society of Medicine Ophthalmology Section, the European Glaucoma Society, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He is passionate about education and plays a significant role in training and education as the undergraduate lead for Ophthalmology at Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
