Dr Eleni Karapanagiotou is a distinguished Medical Oncologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Guy’s Cancer Centre. She specialises in thoracic malignancies, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), small cell lung cancer (SCLC), thymoma, thymic cancers, and mesothelioma.

Dr Karapanagiotou began her medical journey at Athens Medical School in Greece, where she completed her general medical training and initiated her specialist oncology training. She further honed her expertise at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, where she developed a profound interest in research. In 2011, she was awarded a PhD from Athens Medical School for her groundbreaking work on NSCLC.

Her dedication to advancing cancer treatment led her to the Institute of Cancer Research in London, supported by a fellowship from the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). Here, she focused on combining chemotherapy with novel agents such as oncolytic viruses and immunotherapy in advanced cancer. In 2013, she earned an MD(Res) from the University of London, further solidifying her research credentials.

Dr Karapanagiotou is a prolific researcher, with over 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers to her name. She is the principal investigator in clinical trials for lung and breast cancer, with a specific interest in immunotherapy and novel agents. She also serves as the chief investigator for international phase III clinical trials in lung cancer. Her commitment to oncology extends to the elderly, having played a pivotal role in establishing the Geriatric Oncology Clinic at Guy’s Hospital.

In addition to her clinical and research roles, Dr Karapanagiotou is a co-editor of medical books, including “Problem Solving in Cancer and Fertility,” which won the BMA medical book award in 2022. She also acts as an advisor to NICE on new cancer treatments.
