Professor Emmanouil Tsochatzis is a distinguished Professor of Hepatology and Honorary Consultant at the UCL Institute for Liver and Digestive Health, based at the Royal Free Hospital. He also serves as the Head of the Centre for Metabolic Liver Diseases within the ILDH. Since his appointment in 2014, Professor Tsochatzis has been at the forefront of hepatology, leading a specialist multidisciplinary service in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and maintaining an active research programme.
Professor Tsochatzis's clinical and research interests are extensive and include NAFLD, non-invasive fibrosis assessment, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, and metabolic liver diseases such as Wilson's disease and haemochromatosis. His expertise in these areas has made him a sought-after specialist in the field of liver health.
After completing his specialty training and PhD at Hippokration General Hospital in Greece, Professor Tsochatzis moved to the Royal Free Hospital for his post-doctoral research. His contributions to hepatology have been recognised with prestigious awards, including the UEG Rising Star Award in 2014 and the EASL Physician Scientist Fellowship.
In addition to his clinical and research roles, Professor Tsochatzis is deeply involved in shaping clinical guidelines at both national and international levels. He serves as a specialist advisor to NICE and is a member of the steering committee of the Baveno collaboration for portal hypertension. His commitment to education is evident through his active involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
From 2019 to 2022, Professor Tsochatzis was a member of the governing board of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) and chaired the scientific committee in 2021-22. He has led numerous international research collaborations, resulting in over 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals. His work has significantly contributed to the development of risk stratification pathways for patients with liver disease in primary care.
Professor Tsochatzis is passionate about improving patient outcomes in liver disease and has secured funding for his research from esteemed organisations such as NIHR, EASL, and EU Horizon 2020. His dedication to advancing hepatology continues to make a profound impact on the field and the lives of his patients.
