Prof. Ian Loftus is a distinguished Consultant and Prof. in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, recognised as one of the leading aortic surgeons in the UK. He currently practices at St George's Hospital in London, where he has been instrumental in expanding their vascular and endovascular services since his appointment in 2004. In 2014, he was appointed as a Professor in Vascular Surgery at St George's University.
Prof. Loftus completed his medical training with a distinction in surgery and subsequently specialised in vascular surgery in Leicester. His expertise encompasses a wide range of vascular conditions and procedures, including carotid endarterectomy, endovascular aneurysm repair, endovenous surgery (radiofrequency ablation or VNUS), laser varicose vein treatment (ELVA), popliteal entrapment release, sclerotherapy, and thoracic outlet decompression.
He treats various conditions such as aortic aneurysms, aortic dissection, popliteal entrapment syndrome, thoracic aortic aneurysm, thoracic outlet syndrome, varicose veins, and venous insufficiency.
Prof. Loftus has held several prestigious roles throughout his career. He is a past President of both the Vascular Society of Great Britain and the British Society for Endovascular Therapy. He serves as the Director of the Regional Aneurysm Screening Programme and has been a Clinical Tutor for Critical Care at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Additionally, he chaired the National Vascular Committee for Audit and Quality Improvement and was the National Lead for Revalidation in Vascular Surgery. He is also a Council Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Vice Chair of the national vascular surgery clinical reference group.
His contributions to the field extend to national quality improvement programmes (QIP) for vascular surgery, where he was the Lead for the London Aneurysm QIP and participated in the Department of Health working party on peri-operative care.
Prof. Loftus is actively involved in clinical and scientific research into vascular disease. He has published over 300 papers and authored numerous book chapters on vascular and venous disease, contributing significantly to the advancement of medical knowledge in his field.
