Place of primary qualification: University of Crete

Mr. Iosif Pagkalos is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising exclusively in hip and knee replacement surgery. With an NHS practice at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, he holds membership in esteemed professional organisations including the British Hip Society, the British Orthopaedic Association, and the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery, and Arthroscopy (ESSKA).

Having completed his higher surgical training within the prestigious Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Programme, Mr. Pagkalos earned the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS Orth) through examination. He further honed his expertise through two subspecialty fellowships focusing on hip and knee replacements. His first fellowship year was dedicated to hip surgery at University Hospitals Dorset and the Orthopaedic Research Institute under the guidance of Professor Middleton. In his second fellowship year, he specialised in revision joint replacement procedures, joint replacement infection, and limb salvage within the renowned Birmingham Bone Tumour Service.

Mr. Pagkalos's clinical practice includes the treatment of patients with hip and knee arthritis requiring joint replacements, as well as those with malfunctioning joint replacements needing revision surgery. Additionally, he provides expert care for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory arthropathies who require hip and knee replacement surgery. He collaborates closely with rheumatology consultant colleagues at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, jointly managing patients in combined NHS clinics.

In addition to his clinical practice, Mr. Pagkalos has made significant contributions to orthopaedic research, with extensive publications in the field of hip and knee replacements, as well as general orthopaedics. His research interests include investigating hip replacement longevity and the implementation of enabling technologies such as computer navigation and robotic-arm-assisted joint replacement.
