Mr James Ramus is a highly experienced consultant upper GI and bariatric surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading. He qualified from St Mary's Hospital Medical School (now Imperial College), London in 1997, earning an MBBS and a BSc in Anthropology. He completed his basic training in London by 2004 and pursued higher surgical training in the Oxford region, which he completed in 2010. During this period, he was awarded an MD in clinical research from University College, London, for his work on Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer. To date, he has published over 25 peer-reviewed papers.
Mr Ramus was appointed as a consultant at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in May 2012. Over the past eight years, he has played a pivotal role in developing the hospital's bariatric surgical service into a regional Level 1 centre, performing over 200 bariatric procedures annually. In 2017, the unit began performing robotic bariatric surgery and is currently the only unit in the UK to routinely offer this advanced procedure.
In addition to his NHS role, Mr Ramus collaborates with three other upper GI and bariatric surgeons as part of Thames Valley General Surgery LTD (TVGS), a private surgical consortium providing services to the independent sector. TVGS includes 'Optimise Weightloss,' a comprehensive multi-disciplinary team specialising in all types of weight loss procedures, including primary and revisional operations.
Mr Ramus's areas of expertise include gall bladder surgery, acid reflux surgery, weight loss surgery, gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric band, robotic bariatric surgery, revisional bariatric surgery, endoscopic gastric balloon, hernia surgery (both laparoscopic and open), revisional anti-reflux surgery, laparoscopic splenectomy, and upper GI endoscopy.
