About Dr Jonathan Behar

GMC number: 6149085

Year qualified: 2006

Place of primary qualification: University of London

Dr Jonathan Behar is a Consultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in managing patients with heart rhythm disturbances. He works at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and serves as a Senior Clinical Lecturer within the Department of Imaging Sciences at King's College London.

Dr Behar treats a wide range of cardiac complaints, including chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, fainting, swollen legs, and breathlessness. He is highly experienced in the implantation of cardiac devices such as pacemakers, defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronisation therapy, including the latest miniaturised leadless pacemakers. Additionally, he performs catheter ablations for various arrhythmias, including supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias, with a particular interest in new technologies for treating atrial fibrillation.

Dr Behar graduated with honours from the Royal Free and University College Medical School before specialising in general medicine and cardiology in north London. He trained in cardiac rhythm management at the Barts Heart Centre and served as a Locum Consultant at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals before taking up his current position.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Behar has conducted pioneering research in collaboration with engineers, industry, and clinical teams. This research led to the co-invention of an image guidance platform that integrates MRI and X-rays in real-time to personalise the care of patients undergoing cardiac procedures. This innovative work was nominated for a European Innovation Award in 2017.

Dr Behar is passionate about addressing unmet clinical needs through translational and innovative solutions. He was an NHS England Clinical Entrepreneur Fellow and recently led a team that digitised pre-operative consent for patients undergoing cardiac procedures. This project won the Royal College of Physicians Digital Award for Excellence in Patient Care in 2021.

Dr Behar's dedication to advancing cardiac care through both clinical practice and innovative research makes him a leading figure in his field.
