Frequently asked questions
Why did you decide to become a Consultant Radiologist ?
I chose radiology for two main reasons. First, it sits at the heart of any hospital's medical care; almost anything interesting happening clinically in the hospital passes through radiology, so you see a wide spectrum of interesting cases on a daily basis. Second, it is at the cutting edge of technological frontiers in medical healthcare. Those two together made it the right field for me.
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
The presenting complaints I see most often are:
• Abdominal pain
• Change in bowel habit
• Bloating
• Rectal bleeding
• Weight loss
I also see patients with known diagnoses being referred for imaging assessment, including those with Crohn's disease, colorectal and hepatobiliary cancers, as well as benign Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary conditions.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
I am primarily a diagnostic GI/HPB and Oncological radiologist and cover the full spectrum of imaging involved in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disease. The investigations I most commonly use include:
• CT of the chest, abdomen and pelvis, as well CT of the abdomen and pelvis
• CT colonography
• CT of the liver and pancreas, as well as MRI of the liver and pancreas, including MRCP
• MRI small bowel for Crohn's disease as well as MRI pelvis for perianal fistulas
• Pelvic MRI for staging rectal cancer
In terms of therapeutic procedures, I can perform ultrasound-guided and CT-guided procedures, mainly within the abdomen and pelvis.
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
My sub-specialist interests focus is on cancers of the liver and pancreas. Within liver cancers, this includes hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. Within pancreatic cancers, I have a particular interest in pancreatic cancer and neuroendocrine tumours of the pancreas, as well as pancreatic cystic neoplasms.
