About Prof. Malcolm Finlay
Professor Malcolm Finlay is one of London’s leading Consultant Cardiologists and Electrophysiologists. He is based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, where he is the Arrhythmia Research Lead. He is renowned for his expertise in treating atrial fibrillation (AF) and other heart rhythm problems with catheter ablation and other technologies. He is also an expert in implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), pacemakers and implantable loop recorders.
With over two decades of experience, Prof. Finlay continues to perform some of the highest volumes of catheter ablation procedures and device implantations in London. His pioneering work has led to the development of award-winning, highly efficient, and safe cardiac devices, significantly advancing the field of cardiology and aiming to improve patient outcomes. He is proficient in Radiofrequency ablation, 3D Mapping, Cryoablation and Pulsed-field ablation, where he has was one of the first in the UK to use several of the latest technologies.
Growing up in Cardiff, he studied at Oxford University and graduated in 2001 with a BM BCh in Medicine. In 2014, he completed his PhD in Cardiac Electrophysiology at University College London, where he researched the impact of mental stress on heart rhythm problems. During this time, he was awarded a highly prestigious Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship.
Professor Finlay is deeply involved in academic research. He holds the title of Honorary Clinical Professor at Queen Mary University of London. His collaborations with medical engineering and science departments have led to the creation of advanced technologies such as STAR™ mapping and Epicardio Simulation™, and have also significantly contributed to education and training in cardiac care, and his wide-ranging innovations have been recognised by the European Heart Rhythm Association’s Innovation Committee. He was recently awarded Medical Innovator of the Year 2025 by the Forttuna Global awards.
Professor Finlay is a founder and Chief Medical Officer at Echopoint Medical, a London-based Medical Technology company developing groundbreaking devices to enhance minimally invasive procedures and the overall treatment of heart disease.
He is a prolific author and speaker who has contributed to numerous publications and international conferences. He is also a key faculty member at several key academic gatherings, such as the Heart Rhythm Congress, EHRA, and the Heart Rhythm X (Heart Rhythm Innovations) meetings. He served as the Co-Chair of the EHRA Certification Committee where he had responsibility for the certification of Heart Rhythm Specialists across Europe.
Prof. Finlay's dedication to his patients’ well-being is paramount, as evidenced by his development of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures for Atrial Fibrillation. He is also committed to safety, integrating best practices from his aviation skills to achieve successful outcomes.
