Dr Mark Saunders is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. He specialises in colorectal and anal cancer, as well as pseudomyxoma. Dr Saunders has a keen interest in running clinical trials and evaluating novel agents with associated response and toxicity biomarkers and radiology.
Dr Saunders obtained his medical degree from Charing Cross Hospital in 1986 and pursued further training at teaching hospitals in London. He spent five years in general medicine before specialising in oncology. His oncology training included time at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford and later at The Christie in Manchester. As an Imperial Cancer Research Fund Fellow at the Churchill Hospital, he received a Medical Research Council (MRC) grant, which funded his PhD research on gene therapy to enhance tumour cell kill by bioreductive drugs, completed in 1999.
In 1999, Dr Saunders became a consultant at The Christie. He received the Karol Sicher Research Fellowship from the UK Royal College of Radiologists, allowing him to work with Professor Ralph Weichselbaum at the University of Chicago for three months.
Dr Saunders is actively involved in several National Cancer Research Network (NCRN) CRC committees and works with SchAAR to prepare material for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). He chairs or is a member of various Trial Management Groups (TMGs) and Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs). Additionally, he chairs the Northern Cancer Drug Fund (CDF) committee and advises the charity Beating Bowel Cancer.
Dr Saunders is proficient in a range of treatments, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy. He treats conditions such as bowel cancer, colorectal cancer, gastro-intestinal cancers, and stomach cancer.
