Mr Martin Drage is a Consultant Transplant Surgeon at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. He also runs a private clinic at the London Bridge Hospital. He specialises in all aspects of kidney transplant surgery, including living kidney donation, as well as dialysis surgery and vascular access surgery. Additionally, he performs complex hernia repairs in transplant recipients and general abdominal hernia repair surgery.
Mr Drage completed his initial surgical training in Cambridge, working under Sir Roy Calne, a pioneer in transplantation. He then spent four years researching the immune system, tolerance, and T cell biology in the laboratory of Anne Cooke. Following this, he undertook further training in general surgery, kidney, liver, pancreas, and small bowel transplantation at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. Mr Drage then spent a year at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, where he trained in living donor kidney and liver surgery, as well as paediatric transplantation.
He is actively involved in research, particularly in the manipulation of the immune system to improve transplant outcomes. He is currently investigating the manipulation of the innate immune system to reduce ischaemic-reperfusion injury of transplanted organs.
Mr Drage treats a variety of conditions, including appendicitis, bowel cancer, hernias (inguinal and femoral), kidney disease, and pancreatitis. He performs a range of medical tests and treatments, such as appendicectomy, bowel transplant, dialysis surgery (including peritoneal dialysis), kidney transplant surgery (including living kidney donation), keyhole (laparoscopic) hernia repair, liver transplant, and pancreas transplant.
Mr Drage continues to contribute significantly to the field of transplant surgery, combining clinical expertise with a strong research background to enhance patient outcomes.
