Prof. Michael Heneghan is a consultant hepatologist with a specialist interest in liver transplantation and autoimmune liver disease. Prof. Heneghan was the medical director of liver transplantation at Duke University Medical Centre in the U.S.A before returning to King's College Hospital in 2003 as a senior lecturer and consultant hepatologist. He served as the clinical director for liver services at King's College Hospital from 2012 to 2019. Prof. Heneghan has published over 150 scholarly articles and 20 book chapters, and he lectures widely both nationally and internationally.
Prof. Heneghan qualified in medicine at University College Dublin, completing a residency in internal medicine at University College Hospital Galway. He trained in gastroenterology and hepatology between 1995 and 2001 in Ireland, London, and the U.S.A.
Prof. Heneghan's areas of expertise include liver transplantation, endoscopy, autoimmune liver disease, primary biliary cholangitis, hepatology, cirrhosis, liver cancer, alcohol-related liver disease, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and fatty liver disease. He is highly skilled in performing liver transplants and managing complex liver conditions.
Outside of medicine, Prof. Heneghan is an accomplished violinist and an avid theatre-goer. He brings a compassionate and comprehensive approach to patient care, ensuring the best possible outcomes for those he treats. Prof. Heneghan has been a dedicated member of the medical community since his appointment at King's College Hospital in 2003.
