Professor Mike Thomson is a Paediatric Gastroenterologist with over 20 years of experience in dealing with children with gastro-oesophageal reflux and other gastroenterological problems. Having previously served as a consultant at the Royal Free Hospital in London, he now works at Sheffield Children’s Hospital in the Paediatric Gastroenterology Unit and also works in the Portland Hospital in London on a weekly basis. Professor Thomson graduated from Aberdeen Medical School in 1985 and started paediatric gastroenterology training in 1987. In the early 1990s, he spent five years working in Australia, as a Clinical Research Fellow in Gastroenterology and cystic fibrosis at the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation in Brisbane with Prof Ross Shepherd. For his research, he was awarded his Medical Doctorate on cystic fibrosis genetics and energy expenditure.

Professor Thomson has published widely on gastro-oesophageal reflux and endoscopy and many other areas of paediatric gastroenterology, having authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles and over 30 chapters in major paediatric gastrointestinal texts. He regularly delivers lectures in global seminars. He has co-written the standard text for post-graduate Paediatrics – “Concise Paediatrics” – and also for under-graduate paediatrics.
