Prof. Jim Khan: Specialist Colorectal Cancer Surgeon
Prof. Jim Khan is a highly experienced colorectal cancer surgeon with over 25 years of expertise in general and emergency surgery. He is renowned for his proficiency in treating a wide range of disorders affecting the small intestine, colon, and rectum, with a particular focus on bowel cancer. Prof Khan is adept in performing both robotic and laparoscopic surgeries. He practices at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth, and Spire Portsmouth Hospitals.
Prof Khan graduated in 1996 and initially specialised in general surgery. He completed his basic surgical training in the West of Scotland. After earning his Masters from Cardiff University, he joined the Wessex surgical rotation for specialist registrar training in colorectal surgery. During his tenure at Basingstoke, he gained invaluable experience in complex pelvic and rectal cancer surgery under the mentorship of Prof. Heald. In 2007, he was awarded a UK National Laparoscopic Fellowship at Colchester, where he received advanced training in laparoscopic pelvic surgery. He further honed his skills through a travelling clinical fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA, and advanced robotic surgery training in Korea with Prof. Kim.
An international key opinion leader in robotics and colorectal surgery, Prof Khan is deeply involved in medical education and clinical training. He co-directs the Victory Institute of Minimal Access Robotic Surgery (VIMARS) and serves as a national and European trainer in robotic and laparoscopic surgery.
Prof Khan is also a dedicated researcher, holding an honorary chair in surgery at the University of Portsmouth. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed papers on various aspects of colorectal surgery. As the principal investigator of numerous national and international trials, he directs several courses and the TME fellowship program.
Outside of his professional life, Prof Khan is married to a gynaecologist and has two daughters, one studying to become an aeronautical engineer and the other a doctor. He is an avid cricketer, regularly playing for a local club in Romsey. Additionally, he enjoys badminton, golf, and running.
