Mr Muti Abulafi is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon based at Croydon University Hospital (CUH), with over 30 years of experience in his field. He studied Medicine at the University of Cairo and attained fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 1988. He further achieved a Master of Surgery (MS) degree from the University of London in 1993 for his research into intraoperative photodynamic therapy in colorectal cancer. Mr Abulafi completed his surgical training at the Royal London and St Thomas' Hospitals and was appointed as a consultant at CUH in 1996.
Mr Abulafi has a special interest in colorectal cancer and leads the cancer multi-disciplinary team at CUH. He chairs the Colorectal Cancer Pathway Group of the Royal Marsden Partners Accountable Cancer Network. He has been involved in various clinical boards and committees, including the London Cancer Alliance and the Endoscopy Strategy Sub-group for London.
Outside his clinical practice, Mr Abulafi has extensively published on colorectal cancer and cancer genetics. He is the lead investigator of the NICE FIT study, exploring the role of the FIT test in colorectal cancer. He is also the founder and co-convenor of the annual M25 Colorectal Masterclass, a training programme for trainee surgeons.
Mr Abulafi's expertise includes endoscopy, gastroscopy, colonoscopy, colorectal surgery, and keyhole (laparoscopic) hernia repair. He treats conditions such as bowel cancer, constipation, pelvic floor dysfunction, faecal incontinence, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, rectal prolapse, and haemorrhoids. His extensive experience and dedication to his field make him a highly respected specialist in colorectal and general surgery.
