Professor Omer Aziz is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at HCA The Christie Private Care and HCA Wilmslow Hospital. He also holds the position of Manchester Academic Health Science Centre Honorary Clinical Chair at the University of Manchester, a title awarded for his significant contributions to clinical speciality, research, and education.
Graduating from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in 2000, Professor Aziz completed specialist colorectal training in the North-West London deanery programme. He earned a PhD from Imperial College London in 2008 and passed his FRCS exam in 2011. His advanced training includes a high-volume laparoscopic colorectal fellowship at St. Mark's Hospital in 2012, followed by a fellowship in intestinal failure, inflammatory bowel disease surgery, inherited cancers, and coloproctology.
Joining The Christie in 2014, Professor Aziz is based at the Colorectal & Peritoneal Oncology Centre (CPOC) and serves as the Clinical Lead for the peritoneal tumour service. He specialises in complex minimally invasive and open surgical techniques for treating early, advanced, and recurrent tumours of the appendix, colon, rectum, and anus. He also performs cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for tumours that have spread to the abdominal lining.
Professor Aziz has published over 100 peer-reviewed research papers, some of which have informed clinical guidelines by the UK National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). He has secured grants from Innovate UK, Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, and the National Institute for Healthcare Research. He leads cutting-edge research at his lab in the Manchester Cancer Research Centre.
In addition to his clinical and research roles, Professor Aziz has an interest in translating research into patient treatments and is a national trainer in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. His expertise includes procedures such as colonoscopy, colorectal surgery, keyhole hernia repair, and treatments for conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, haemorrhoids, and anal fistula.
