Professor Paolo De Coppi: Consultant Paediatric Surgeon

Professor Paolo De Coppi is a distinguished Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, England. He also serves as the Head of the Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine department at the UCL Institute of Child Health. His extensive career includes roles as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Wake Forest University, since 2009, and as an Honorary Assistant Professor in paediatric surgery at the University of Padua, Italy, since 2005.

Professor De Coppi has a profound interest in congenital malformations and their treatment using minimally invasive techniques. His research is primarily focused on stem cells and tissue engineering, aiming to develop new treatments for complex congenital anomalies. During his tenure at Boston Children's Hospital, he identified the potential of using stem cells from amniotic fluid for therapeutic applications. This groundbreaking discovery led to an international patent and was featured as the cover story of Nature Biotechnology in January 2007.

More recently, Professor De Coppi and his team have demonstrated that these stem cells can differentiate into various tissues, restoring functional activity in animal models of diseases. His current focus is on developing reliable methods for stem cell isolation, expansion, and differentiation at a clinical level (GMP-grade). In 2010, he was part of the pioneering team that performed the first successful transplantation of a tissue-engineered trachea on a child at the Great Ormond Street Hospital.
