Year qualified: 1986

Place of primary qualification: University of London

Dr Paula Wells is a distinguished medical specialist in oncology, currently serving at Barts Health NHS Trust. She completed her oncology training at St. Bartholomew's, UCLH, and Mount Vernon Hospitals. Following her Fellowship, she pursued a postgraduate research degree at Imperial College School of Medicine, Hammersmith Hospital, where she investigated the potential for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) to demonstrate the biological effects of chemotherapy in tissue. Her groundbreaking work earned her several awards and a Ph.D.

Dr Wells specialises in the management of genitourinary (bladder and prostate) and thoracic (lung and mesothelioma) malignancies. She is proficient in non-surgical treatments, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biological, and targeted therapies. She employs advanced radiotherapy techniques such as image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), 4D CT, and Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SABR and SRS) using both Cyberknife and Linear accelerator platforms. Additionally, she has extensive experience in low dose rate brachytherapy (LDR) for prostate cancer.

Since her appointment in 2000, Dr Wells has played a pivotal role in developing genitourinary and thoracic cancer services for the North East London Cancer Network. She maintains an active trial portfolio and is the principal investigator for several key radiotherapy studies. Her research continues to focus on the effects of radiotherapy on tissue and integrating novel therapies with radiation. Dr Wells currently holds the positions of Clinical Governance and Audit Lead for Barts Cancer Centre and Chairs the Stereotactic Body MDT.
