Professor Philip Bloom is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon and lead clinician/service director at the Western Eye Hospital, where he oversees the glaucoma and cataract services. He graduated from Bristol University Medical School and completed his postgraduate training at Bristol Eye Hospital, Western Eye Hospital, and Moorfields Eye Hospital. He was selected for clinical fellowships at both the Western Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital.
Professor Bloom holds the title of honorary professor of ophthalmology at Middlesex University and serves as an honorary clinical senior lecturer at Imperial College School of Medicine. He is the immediate past president of the Royal Society of Medicine Ophthalmology Section, a UKISCRS council member, and a trustee of the International Glaucoma Association (IGA). His special interests lie in glaucoma and cataract surgery, and he has published over 80 peer-reviewed scientific research and teaching papers.
Professor Bloom's areas of expertise include small incision cataract surgery, with a focus on achieving spectacle independence through the use of multi-focal and toric intraocular lenses. He is also skilled in laser and surgical glaucoma treatments, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. In addition to cataracts and glaucoma, he treats external eye diseases and is experienced in general and emergency ophthalmology.
Professor Bloom has been with the Western Eye Hospital since his appointment and continues to contribute significantly to the field of ophthalmology through his clinical practice, research, and teaching.
