Frequently asked questions
Why do you do what you do?
I love the breadth of general practice and the chance to be a “specialist within a generalist.” After completing menopause specialist training, I started working in private practice so I could offer longer, more holistic consultations and focus on women’s hormonal health while working closely with gynaecology colleagues.
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
Most people see me about perimenopause or menopause. Symptoms vary widely—hot flushes, sleep disturbance, joint pains, headaches, anxiety and mood change are typical. I also see women for contraception and for premenstrual problems including PMS and PMDD. I am also able to see adolescent girls from age 13 for all areas of hormonal health, period and pelvic pain.
Some patients are new to treatment; others want to optimise existing treatment, particularly HRT and testosterone therapy.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
I individualise care for all patients and always discuss lifestyle as this plays a big role in managing symptoms.
When treating perimenopausal and menopause symptoms, I prescribe HRT and testosterone when indicated, vaginal oestrogen and hormonal contraception to treat menopausal symptoms, particularly earlier perimenopausal symptoms. I also prescribe non-hormonal options including antidepressants and other therapies.
I fit and remove coils (IUDS – both copper and progesterone eg Mirena) and contraceptive implants.
In addition, I do cervical screening, sexual health screens, breast examination and insertion of ring pessaries.
I perform blood tests when needed, and these an be done at the hospital or in a clinic nearby. I work closely with colleagues, and refer for pelvic ultrasound scans, pelvic health physiotherapy and to see other specialists when needed.
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
Menopause and perimenopause are my core focus. I have growing interests in PMS/PMDD and in managing hormonal and menopause-related headaches.
