Mr Rodney Laing is a distinguished Consultant Neurosurgeon at Addenbrookes Hospital, appointed in 1995. He has a special interest in spinal neurosurgery, encompassing both complex procedures and minimally invasive (keyhole) surgeries, often performed as day cases. His expertise includes treating back pain, leg pain (sciatica), neck pain, arm pain (brachalgia), trauma, tumours, Chiari malformations, and syringomyelia.
In 2000, Mr Laing was appointed director of higher neurosurgical training for the Eastern Deanery, contributing significantly to neurosurgical education at both local and national levels, including the Royal College of Surgeons in London. He has held key roles such as secretary of the British Cervical Spine Society and was instrumental in establishing the British Association of Spine Surgeons, serving on its Executive Committee.
Mr Laing became Clinical Lead for Neurosurgery at Addenbrookes in 2009 and Clinical Director of Neurosciences in 2013. He has introduced pivotal initiatives, including day case spinal surgery, and is a Council member of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons. He also serves on the Neuroscience Clinical Commissioning Group.
Mr Laing collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, sports medicine physicians, neurologists, rheumatologists, and pain specialists to provide comprehensive care. He is committed to achieving the highest standards, auditing his practice, and publishing surgical outcomes in peer-reviewed journals.
