Dr Rassam is a highly qualified and experienced haematologist with a special interest in lymphoid malignancies and research into the immune mechanisms and therapy of cancer. He received his medical degree from the University of Baghdad in 1980 and completed his post-graduate training in haematology in the UK on a scholarship in 1986. He was trained as a Registrar at the Royal Free Hospital, London, and Edgware General Hospital, and as a Senior Registrar and University of London Lecturer at St Bartholomew's Hospital, University College Hospital, and the Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street.
Dr Rassam's research interests are focused on the role of the immune system in lymphatic cancer. He has established a research laboratory at Queen Mary's Hospital to study this area. He has presented his findings at national and international meetings and has won a number of prestigious awards. Additionally, he has authored several national clinical trial proposals.
Dr Rassam is an active member of several professional organizations, including the low and high-grade lymphoma subgroups of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI), the British Society of Haematology, the American Society of Haematology, and the UK Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinaemia Group. He is also an author of the British Society of Haematology Guidelines in Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinaemia.
Dr Rassam's contributions to the field of haematology extend beyond research. He serves as an examiner and appointment advisory officer for the Royal College of Pathologists and is the chairman of the Hemato-Oncology Group in the Kent Cancer Network. He is responsible for updating the lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) guidelines for the group.
