About Ms Sarah Addison

GMC number: 4291798

Year qualified: 1996

Place of primary qualification: University of Birmingham

Dr Sarah Addison is a consultant colorectal and general surgeon practising at The Priory Hospital, Birmingham, and HCA The Harborne Hospital. She also holds an NHS role in the colorectal surgery department at Queen?Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Appointed as a consultant in 2009, she has over 15 years of specialist experience in pelvic floor disorders and colorectal surgery. She uses pronouns she/her.

A graduate of the University of Birmingham in 1996, she completed her basic surgical training in the West Midlands before undertaking a research post in East Anglia investigating colonic calcium signalling. She returned to the West Midlands to finish higher surgical training specialising in general and colorectal surgery. During that time she was awarded a travelling fellowship to Barnes Jewish Hospital, St Louis, to study laparoscopic surgery techniques and advanced peritoneal cancer treatment.

Her areas of expertise include colorectal cancer, benign coloproctology, pelvic floor disorders (such as rectal prolapse, obstructed defaecation and slow transit constipation), functional bowel conditions and anal incontinence. She works closely with uro gynaecologists at Birmingham Women’s Hospital to run a multidisciplinary pelvic floor service. She also treats conditions such as anal fistula, haemorrhoids, hernias (inguinal, incisional, umbilical), pilonidal disease, diverticular disease, anal fissures and skin lesions.

Her procedural skills cover diagnostic and flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, laparoscopic colectomy, incisional, inguinal and umbilical hernia repair, haemorrhoidectomy, haemorrhoidal artery ligation (HALO), lateral internal sphincterotomy, sacral nerve modulation, percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation, reversal of Hartmann’s procedure, ileoanal pouch surgery (J pouch), pilonidal sinus surgery and anal fistula surgery.

She has held leadership roles establishing a joint pelvic floor clinic at Walsall Manor Hospital and continues to lead the multidisciplinary pelvic floor service at QEHB. Her practice combines evidence-based care, advanced laparoscopic techniques and a patient centred, team based approach, ensuring optimal outcomes for complex colorectal and pelvic floor conditions.
