Year qualified: 1981
Place of primary qualification: University of Delhi
Mr Shiv Bhanot is a highly respected Consultant Urological Surgeon at Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust, a position he has held since 1995. With over 15 years of experience, Mr Bhanot has performed more than 1,000 prostatectomies, including 500 laparoscopic operations. In 2005, he introduced the laparoscopic (keyhole) prostatectomy procedure in Essex and has since pioneered extraperitoneal and minimal cut laparoscopic surgery for prostate cancer. This innovative approach is less traumatic than standard robotic or laparoscopic prostatectomy and includes a 'nerve-sparing' technique to preserve potency in younger men with early prostate cancer.
Mr Bhanot's expertise extends beyond prostate cancer to encompass a wide range of general urological conditions. He treats men's health issues, kidney stones, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), kidney cancer, and urinary incontinence. His contributions to medical research include the application of various forms of energy, such as radio-frequency, microwaves, and lasers, to prostatic enlargement. His work has led to advancements in diagnostic methods and surgical techniques, including the establishment of one-stop diagnostic services.
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Bhanot is an honorary lecturer at the Institute of Urology, London. He is dedicated to training the next generation of urology consultants and fellows in advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques. He also serves as a board director for the Société Internationale d'Urologie and is a member of the national cancer peer review group. Mr Bhanot regularly reviews research papers for the Gold Journal of Urology and has authored several original research papers. He is an honoured visiting professor at universities in the Middle East, USA, and China.
Mr Shiv Bhanot's commitment to advancing urological surgery and improving patient outcomes makes him a leading figure in his field.
